Tik Tok is a social media and entertainment platform that will be banned from the US app store. It will not be available for downloading from midnight, on Sunday, September 20th. The US also bans another Chinese –owned messaging app We Chat by the executive orders of President Donald Trump.
Tik Tok has 100 million users in the united states and is more prevalent in American teenagers whereas Wechat has an average of 19 million daily active users in the united states and is popular among the American students.
The US Department of commerce forced Apple and Google to remove the Chinese versions of Tik Tok and WeChat from their app stores.
The Trump administration has always said that these apps are a real threat because they collect data. Wilbur Ross, US commerce secretary, said that by implementing these orders, the US is taking significant action against china collecting the personal data of American citizens without their consent.
Tik Tok owner Bytedance denies any claim of holding any personal user data in China and that the data is stored in the United States and Singapore. China regarded the banning of its apps as ‘bullying’ and said that it might take unspecified countermeasures for banning its popular video app.
The app’s owner now has to find an acceptable deal for the US. According to some reports, china may delete the app instead of selling it to America.
Commerce says that it will not penalise people who use tik-tok. Many app users are already planning to switch to other apps. However, for those who already have the app, not much will change until November 12th.
Also, Instagram and youtube have expanded themselves to Instagram reels and youtube shorts, respectively. The beta versions of these were launched recently in the past few months.
The officials said that the ban can still be cancelled by the orders of Donald Trump before September 20th.
United stated it is not the only country to ban Tik Tok and We chat, India has also denied these apps. The UK Information commissioner’s are currently watching the actions of Tik Tok.
