Developer Daedalic Entertainment recently released a new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and boy does it look good.

Though the trailer doesn’t show much, just seeing the footage in incredible next-gen visuals is enough to give fans a taste of what’s to come when the game fully launches. Gollum/Sméagol looks much more youthful here, with more hair than what we’ve seen in the films, and the painstaking detail here is definitely a sight for sore eyes, even if we’re looking at heaps of fish carcasses and cavern interiors.

Previously, we’d learnt that the game will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021, and the gameplay will be a more stealth-based experience, as opposed to the action-oriented stuff we’ve seen in the likes of Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The Daedalic devs revealed a few more nuggets of information in a recent interview with IGN.

“If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince of Persia,” said lead game designer Martin Wilkes. “It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies.”

Additionally, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will also feature story-driven gameplay, including dialogue choices and branching narratives, which gives more incentive for multiple playthroughs. As narrative designer Tilman Schanen described, this manifests most clearly in the ability to switch between Gollum or Sméagol personas, which “affects the way the game feels”. We imagine playing as either persona will impact gameplay directly, as well as interactions with NPCs.

In any case, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum certainly has a lot of promise, and we’re hoping Daedalic delivers on that end when it releases in 2021.

Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
