In what is easily among the worst-kept secrets in gaming, a new Harry Potter title, Hogwarts Legacy, is on the way, but the truly magical part of this wizarding story is that it’s coming to Sony’s PlayStation 5 first.
During Sony’s global Livestream event on September 16 showcasing the new PS5 tech in all it’s shiny, 4K glory, a new IP from rookie developers, Portkey Games, showed off the illustrious Great Hall filled to the brim with pupils, a number of dazzling spells, and what we can only guess are some fan-favourite characters from the world-famous books and films.
As we mentioned, the muggle/gaming world knew it would collide with the magical world of Harry Potter for a while now, with leaked images of a new HP game heading to next-gen consoles almost two years ago, but it still comes as a shock that Sony got the opportunity to show it off over Microsoft, who has only just announced the release date and price of its new Xbox Series X consoles at the beginning of September.
If the console war wasn’t heating up enough already, Sony is already looking like the better option when it comes to exclusives, with the PS5 boasting Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, and the upcoming God of War 2 for starters.
Microsoft, on the other hand, suffered a major blow when it was revealed Halo Infinite, the big Xbox Series X exclusive, would be delayed until 2021, and have the wonderful but not-as-enticing Forza games to compete with at launch. Score one for Sony so far.
As for the HP game itself, Portkey Games was formed back in 2017 and announced it was working on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the popular Mobile game from Pokemon Go creators Niantic. We have no idea how this game will differ from its mobile little brother, but we’d expect some swishing and flicking to be involved at some point.
A short trailer showed off the familiar Hogwarts Castle full of mystery, magic, and dangerous creatures, though we don’t really know what to expect from this game, both in terms of story and gameplay.
If we had to guess, it looks like it could be an RPG-type game that will have you building your own student to take through the wizarding education system, wand at the ready, to enjoy a similar adventure to the famous Harry Potter. Taking lessons could improve your ability stats at certain spells, while defeating monstrosities might provide you with ingredients to enhance your potions as you play.
Again, we have no idea when this is set within the Harry Potter universe, or indeed if we will be seeing the famous Boy Who Lived in this game, but we did see some characters that looked awfully similar to the ones we know and love, such as a wizened old teacher that looks like a teeny adorable Dumbledore, and one that looks a smidge like Snape.
Hint that this game isn’t called “Harry Potter and the next-gen console game”, but is Hogwarts Legacy, so we expect the game to move away from the popular franchise story and tell its own tale. It would be folly of the studio to not include some big-name characters to help immerse us into the world, but this likely isn’t the Harry Potter role-playing game we were all dreaming of for two years.
No release date as of yet, but now we know the official release date for the PlayStation 5 is November 19 in the UK, we can assume Hogwarts Legacy will be hitting the console within a few months of release.
