Watching a coronavirus-themed anthology drama while the pandemic is still ongoing might sounds like a strange thing to do, but the Netflix series is hoping to help viewers get to grips with life right now.

Co-written by Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, the eight-part series is set in the initial months of the pandemic and showcases the power of the human spirit in the face of uncertainty and isolation.

Actress Lovie Simone plays the girlfriend of Asante Blackk’s character, a man struggling to stay on his job when he really wants to protest police brutality following the murder of George Floyd.

And while the show covers some pretty hard-hitting topics, the actress tells Metro.co.uk that it ultimately aims to provide some much-needed catharsis.

She explained: ‘I hope viewers get a sense of comfort in the new normal. That way it could be easier to move forward.

‘I feel like that people should understand how important it is to talk to your loved ones and not be taking that time for granted. Because even though you might not physically be there with people, it’s still important.

‘Before the pandemic, I feel like everybody was just in their own world, always on the go and never really stopping. This time has reminded up how much it means to just say, “Hey, I’m just calling to say I love you.”‘

Like many people in the country, her character Ayana is just trying to make her way through the new normal, and Simone explained: ‘She is like us all, just dealing with the questions popping up about navigating in this time, going out to protest and communicating with family and friends. That’s been the reality of the pandemic for a lot of people.’

Simone, who self-filmed for the role, had to adapt to changes just like her character as she added: ‘It was such a different work experiences for me because I have all these co-workers but I’ve never seen them in real life.

‘As an actor, you usually work off people’s energy and their body movements but I just had to bank on what they could possibly be doing while I filmed myself on my iPhone.

The Trial of the Chicago 7: Who is in the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s new movie?

‘But now it’s a new experience under my belt and I have a whole new set of skills when it comes to filming.’
