Samsung has announced two new lineups of SD cards for professionals and content creators, the EVO Plus and PRO Plus families. The PRO Plus family is the more capable of the two, promising support for 4K video recording and burst shots from cameras.
In terms of raw performance, the PRO Plus lineup promises sequential read speeds up to 100MB/s, and sequential writes up to 90MB/s (60MB/s in the 32GB capacity), with all models falling in U3 and Class 10 speed classes. The EVO Plus lineup simply promises “transfer speeds” up to 100MB/s, with no distinction between reads and writes. The 128GB and 256GB capacities fall in the U3 and Class 10 speed classes, but the 32GB and 64GB versions are only U1.
Both cards offer models up to 256GB, and they both promise to be resilient. Samsung says the cards are waterproof (for depths up to 1m for up to 72 hours); temperature-proof (operating temperatures between -25°C and 85°C); X-ray-proof (up to 100mGy); magnet-proof up to 15,000 gauss; shockproof up to 1,500Gs; drop-proof up to five meters, and wearout-proof up to 10,000 swipes.
The cards will be available to pre-order today in the United States, and they’ll be available from October 19, with the exception of the 32GB and 64GB PRO Plus models, which are coming on November 8. The PRO Plus lineup starts at $9.99 for 32GB and goes up to $49.99 for 256GB, while the EVO Plus starts at $6.99 and goes up to $29.99 for the same capacities.
