Samsung is working on its version of 3D ToF Sensor which may debut with the Galaxy S21 series early next year.
Details of the new Samsung sensor were spotted in a document filed at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). Called ISOCELL Vizion camera, the description suggests it will be a 3D ToF sensor.
“Time-of-flight (TOF) optical sensors for smartphones, facial recognition system comprising TOF optical sensors, 3D modelling and 3D measurement of objects with TOF sensors; Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) in the nature of motion sensors for smartphones; proximity detection sensors and Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) for detecting the shape, proximity, movement, colour and behaviour of humans,” read the description (via Google Translate).
Based on the description, Samsung’s new sensor will bring better face recognition as well as better depth-sensing capabilities. It is worth noting that Apple is rumoured to add 3D ToF camera on its upcoming iPhone 12 series. The company has already implemented a LiDAR sensor on its iPads.
The ToF camera sensors will pave way for more accurate and immersive Augmented Reality experience on smartphones. The sensor can be used to measure distance as well as scan object. The module can be used for gesture recognition and indoor navigation. Other use cases include 3D imaging.
As you have guessed by now, the sensor offers a variety of use cases. An ecosystem around the sensor could help service provider offer more innovative solutions for better engagement. Users can at least expect the sensor to help improve portrait photography as well as 3D photography.
