Last week, Amazon unveiled its next-generation Fire TV Sticks, including a budget-friendly Fire TV Stick Lite. Now, Amazon’s biggest competitor in the streaming device market has revealed a pair of new devices of its own. Roku is updating its premium Roku Ultra streaming device with new features, including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Roku is also adding the Streambar to its lineup, a device that puts Roku’s streaming platform inside a compact soundbar. Both devices are available to preorder now directly from Roku ahead of their October 18 release, and they should be available soon at major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.
For more on streaming devices, make sure to check out our roundup of the best streaming devices. While Roku (and Fire TV Sticks) still don’t officially support HBO Max, select Roku devices will soon be able to stream HBO Max via Apple AirPlay 2.
The new Roku Ultra adds several features that improve on the 2019 model. For starters, it has better processing speeds to allow for even quicker app launching and navigation. Its wireless range has been extended 50%, so it won’t need to be as close to your router. As for overall stream quality, the addition of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support adds to an already-great 4K viewing experience.
The Ultra comes with a pair of JBL earbuds and a box with HDMI, ethernet, and USB ports. Unfortunately, Roku removed the microSD card slot in the 2020 edition. For current Roku Ultra owners, it’s not really necessary to upgrade. But for those looking for a 4K streaming device, the new Ultra would be a great choice.
The Roku Streambar bundles your streaming device and soundbar purchase into one convenient package. The 14-inch Streambar supports 4K streaming with HDR and features Dolby Audio (but not Dolby Vision). It’s Bluetooth-enabled, so you can listen to music from your devices too. The Streambar comes with the same handy Roku remote, which includes shortcut buttons for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Sling. You can also navigate the menus using voice controls.
