Amazon-owned company Ring is on a mission to reduce crime in South Africa. The company recently launched a line of home security cameras, including the Ring Video Doorbell 3, which easily connects to your phone via an app.

The brand is known for its innovative range of smart devices. Whether you’re a business owner, homeowner, or concerned fur-parent looking for an indoor camera or a Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell, then Ring has you covered.

“Our mission started at the front door with Ring Video Doorbell, the first device that lets you see, hear and speak to visitors from anywhere. So we took what makes it great and gave you even more control to protect what’s important”.

I’ve been reviewing the Ring Video Doorbell 3, which features 1080p video resolution and advanced motion settings. Here’s why you might want to consider investing in a Ring Video Doorbell 3

Home security is a constant concern for South Africans as we deal with the country’s escalating crime stats. The Ring suite of products helps by providing remote surveillance solutions without having to spend a fortune.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 was surprisingly easy to install. The Video Doorbell 3 does what it says on the box: it’s a doorbell that connects to your Wi-Fi and lets you see who’s at your door.

It comes with battery and wired options, looks stylish, has improved motion detection, and takes less than 15 minutes to set up. In addition, you’ll receive mobile notifications when someone steps into view.

With the Ring Video Doorbell 3’s “near zone” feature, you would be able to detect motion within 1.5 to 4.5 metres of your front door. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi to ensure a stronger, reliable connection with fewer interruptions.

You’ll need to download the Ring app from your app store of choice. Once you’ve created an account and confirmed your email address, you’re ready to jump into the app, which is pretty straightforward and intuitive to use.

In addition to operating as a standard doorbell, you’re able to initiate a “call” from the app. So, if someone rings your bell and you’re not home, you can simply dial in and speak to them. Impressive, right?

One of the things that make Ring devices so great for home security is its intelligent motion-sensing technology. Once installed, I would get alerts from the app if there was motion in front of my door; even if no one rang the bell.

This is really useful for picking up potential bad guys who may be looking to get a closer look at your home. Furthermore, you can set the device up to take still images at set intervals, regardless of whether any motion is picked up.

The field of vision is quite impressive, too. The Ring Video Doorbell 3 gives a wide angle of everything happening in front of your door. From the app, you can easily connect to the camera at any time and get a live view of what it’s seeing.

You’ll also be able to set various modes from the app to control how all of your Ring devices detect movement. This is very useful if you’ve set up an indoor Ring Camera along with your Video Doorbell 3.

It means you can choose Home Mode when you’re in and your devices will only report movement outside of your home. Away Mode will report any movement within or outside your home; Disarm Mode will ignore all movement.

In a larger home, you have the option of adding chimes to your system, which will alert you if you’re some distance from the door and don’t have your phone nearby.

I was amazed and pleasantly surprised at how easy it was set up and install. One thing to note: I couldn’t complete the setup until I had put the battery pack on the charger, despite the device powering up immediately on start-up.

That said, the app does inform you to charge it first; batteries discharge over time, after all. It’s just worth noting that a powered-up device doesn’t mean the batteries are fully charged and ready for set up. Follow the instructions, people.

The quality of the device is impressive (in fact, it goes beyond what I expected from a video-enabled doorbell). In addition, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 feels as though it could last a really long time.

However, the most impressive part of the product is probably the software which is easy to use and add additional devices. If you’ve ever used Google Home, you’ll appreciate just how well designed the Ring app is in comparison.

All in all, the device offers excellent value, and I can’t wait to add a few more devices to my network.

Ring Africa products are now available from local retailers since 14 September. Simply head over to the following retailers – Takealot, Builders Warehouse, iStore, Incredible Connection and Leroy Merlin.
