Filming on the Resident Evil reboot is in full swing: we’ve gotten a look at a major location and a glimpse of one of the monsters who will stalk the grounds of Spencer Mansion.
47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts is directing the film, with the story written by Greg Russo riffing off of the real heart-thudding experience of playing the games. “With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them,” explained Roberts in a recent statement. “Whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”
Chris and Claire Redfield will appear (played by Robbie Amell and Kaya Scodelario), as well as Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia), Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper), and Dr. William Birkin (Neal McDonough). Resultantly, it seems like the movie will stitch together the stories of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, and a slew of set photos snapped by passersby reinforces this stab in the dark.
Filming is taking place right now in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and nosy parkers have been able to walk rather close to the sets before security tells them to move along. First things first, the Raccoon City Police Department looks like it’s been lifted from the Resident Evil 2 Remake, which will send fans into a frothing frenzy. This photo from after the sun has set is especially atmospheric. Moreover, the film might be replicating the suspenseful opening to Resident Evil 2, with a gasoline truck spotted coursing down a road in Sudbury. It’s even the correct colours from the game, showing a brilliant dedication to detail.
And, the pièce de résistance: Resident Evil’s Lisa Trevor might be making an appearance in the reboot. For those to unacquainted with Lisa, she is a test subject of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, and her reaction to the experiments developed the G-Virus from her own mutated DNA. A tragic figure, she is eventually killed by the company when she is no longer useful. However, her strength meant that she survived her execution, and Lisa ekes out an existence in a cabin on the edge of Spencer Mansion.
On Instagram, contortionist and actress Marina Mazepa showed off a video of a special effects team moulding her own head for a movie. It’s a very cool time-lapse, and a strange moment when she proudly wobbles a blue cast of her head in her hands. In the tags, she revealed her character by typing “#lisatrevor #lisatrevorresidentevil.”
Resident Evil will be released in 2021, though Sony hasn’t pinned a proper date down yet. In the meantime, Resident Evil Village is in development, and continues the gruelling first-person survival horror experiences of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. “We set out with the concept of making a beautiful yet terrifying village and I think we succeeded in bringing that concept to life,” said art director Tomonori Takano.
