PS5 pre-order customers have been given a boost this week, as the console’s holiday 2020 release date looks increasingly likely.

While Sony is yet to announce the official release date, fans have been speculating that the console would be delayed due to coronavirus restrictions.

However, according to a transcript of the recent AMD investor call, company CEO Lisa Su suggested that production is on track for a late 2020 launch. As a reminder, AMD is developing chips for both next-gen consoles.

“Revenue of $348 million decreased 21% year-over-year as lower semi-custom revenue more than offset a significant increase in server revenue,” Su revealed (via Yahoo).

“As expected, semi-custom product revenue was negligible in the quarter, as Sony and Microsoft both reduced inventory in advance of next-generation console launches.”

Su then went on to confirm that production is about to ramp up for the launch of next-gen consoles.

“We expect semi-custom revenue to increase in the second quarter and be heavily weighted towards the second half of the year as we ramp production to support the holiday launches of the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles.”

The exciting news comes ahead of the Xbox Series X game reveal, which will be broadcast live on Inside Xbox.

“You want to see games for the Xbox Series X? We want to show you games for the Xbox Series X,” Microsoft reveals.

“Check out First Look next-gen gameplay from our global developers partners within #InsideXbox on Thursday, May 7 at 8am PT.”

In the build up to the big event, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has been talking up the new Xbox.

In an open letter detailing the console’s specs, Spencer said that the console would use a custom-designed processor “leveraging AMD’s latest Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures”.

“Delivering four times the processing power of an Xbox One and enabling developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) performance – twice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One,” Microsoft explains.

“Xbox Series X delivers a true generational leap in processing and graphics power with cutting edge techniques resulting in higher framerates, larger, more sophisticated game worlds, and an immersive experience unlike anything seen in console gaming.”

Backwards compatibility also plays a big part in the Xbox Series X, as Microsoft brings classic games to the console.
