Digital photo frames definitely aren’t anywhere near as popular as they used to be, but Netgear clearly still thinks there’s demand, though, as the company just launched a new one.

It’s called the Meural WiFi Photo Frame, and will be hard to miss because it uses a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS display. The frame measures 16-by-10-by-1.68-inches and weighs 2.9lbs, and it can be wall mounted using the included mount, anchors, and screws.

Behind that large display is a quad-core ARM processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage, although only 4GB can be used for storing photos. As you’d expect, Wi-Fi is a standard feature and there’s support for both iOS and Android devices allowing for photo albums to easily be uploaded to the Meural using the dedicated Meural app.

Netgear uses “intelligent location, date and image titles” so you know when and where photos were taken, and you can schedule albums and playlists to be displayed at different times throughout the day. The photo frame has a built-in gesture control function allowing you to “wave up” and have the location and date details appear for the current photo, or wave across to load the next photo.

The display will automatically change its orientation dependent on whether you have the photo frame positioned in portrait or landscape mode, but it also has a built-in ambient light sensor. This ensures the “proper brightness” is automatically selected to make the photos as clear as possible taking into account a room’s lighting conditions. It also allows the Meural to enter a sleep state when it’s dark. Video is supported, although limited due to the small amount of storage included with the frame.

The Meural WiFi Photo Frame is available now, but certainly isn’t cheap at $299.95. There’s also the option of content provided by the Meural Art Library, but it requires a subscription costing $69.95 a year. Netgear offers a larger device under the Meural name called the Meural Canves II, which is available in both 21-inch and 27-inch models. Both models also benefit from the image and video sharing features introduced alongside the new digital photo frame this week.
