We are yet again in a state of flux, despite no evidence that hair and beauty salons have a high risk of transmission

The hair and beauty industry have yet again spent the weekend in turmoil. There has been wide-spread speculation as to whether our sector might be included in the Prime Minister’s announcement today regarding what businesses would close in a Tier 3 lockdown area.

According to our sources some discussions are still live this morning, so without any certainty we are yet again in a state of flux. This is a sector that was one of the last to reopen after restrictions were lifted.

As far as we are aware, there is no evidence that hair and beauty salons have a high risk of transmission. We believe that our strict Covid-secure regimes mean that these settings are being operated safely. Not to mention hair and beauty salons are staffed by professionals who have always needed to adopt strict hygiene standards and who have introduced a wide range of further strict hygiene measures to ensure they are Covid-secure.

The hair and beauty sector has been decimated by the approach to reopening, and a move into Tier 3 will close some businesses for good. Most salons are trading at less than 50 percent of their pre-Covid turnover, and city centres have been hit the hardest with London seeing a drop in 61 percent year-on-year revenues. This is very concerning when European cities are faring much better at on average around 10 percent drop year-on-year.

The recent working from home advice has just added to the challenges these businesses face as less people travel to work into city centres.

There are of course huge negative consequences for businesses, local economies, livelihoods and for employees in the sector – particularly as an industry that has not received any additional support from Government above and beyond the initial business grants earlier in the year.

The hair and beauty industry contributes £28.4bn to the UK’s GDP, in 2018 £27.2 billion was spent on hair, beauty and wellbeing. We employ over 600,000 people, predominantly women, across almost 50,000 salons, and our businesses are at the heart of the UK’s high streets up and down the country offering personal wellbeing at a time when we need it the most.

Hair and beauty salons, spas, cosmetics and personal care products are vital for health, and self-esteem; all of which are important for mental health and overall well-being which are even more vital during the pandemic.

It doesn’t make sense to keep these businesses closed and I fear that many will go bust if we’re forced into the 3rd tier. So I hope for everyone’s sake our hairdressers and beauticians can continue to work.
