A strange glitch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare lets players experience the game in third-person.
Although Call of Duty has typically been a first-person shooter, certain game modes have allowed players a different vantage point in the past. Back in the glory days of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, players could choose to play a ‘3rd Person Team Tactical’ playlist.
Despite some people loving the third-person gameplay, it didn’t exactly feel like Call of Duty. Perhaps, as a result, the mode has never returned to the franchise to date.
In Modern Warfare 3, players could access third-person modes only in private online matches. And in subsequent Call of Duty titles, the option was gone completely.
A new glitch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare appears to have unlocked a secret third-person option for the game. Looking at the footage, it appears that perhaps a third-person camera is in the game’s code somewhere.
For whatever reason, the new way to play didn’t seem to make it into the final cut. But there’s a way to access it by glitching your Modern Warfare game.
A new post on the Warzone subreddit shows off the third-person gameplay, which looks just how we remember it. Thanks to a behind-the-player viewpoint, it’s possible to peek around corners without exposing yourself to enemy fire easily.
Reportedly, the glitch occurred when a player’s teammate left the game during their revival animation. Playing the Spec Ops game mode, the player quit out whilst being picked up.
Since the revive animation is in third-person, it appears that the game doesn’t know how to handle a leaver. Therefore, the player remains in third-person for the duration of the match.
Aiming down a weapon’s sights leads to the camera zooming in for an over-the-shoulder view. This is very reminiscent of other third-person shooters, and it certainly looks programmed in.
However, the player’s sniper rifle is next to useless, since the scope doesn’t display in third-person. We’d like to see a real third-person mode make a comeback one day, but for now, we’ll have to settle for what we can get.
It’s not the only third-person glitch in Modern Warfare either, and even Warzone has its ways of accessing the mode. In online games, third-person is a major advantage, so Activision is usually left to come up with a fix.
