Update: Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie, rejected all the rumors around Microsoft’s interest in Bungie’s acquisition.
Original Story: After leaving the development of the Halo series to 343 Industries, Microsoft and Bungie didn’t have any eye-catching partnership with each other until this year, but some new rumors suggest that Microsoft has always been interested in acquiring the studio.
During a recent podcast by Jeff Grubb on YouTube, GamesBeat’s writer confirmed that he has heard from different sources that Microsoft has attempted to acquire Bungie several times, but due to the studio’s high price, they’ve failed to finish the deal each time.
That being said, Microsoft probably isn’t interested in acquiring any studios in the near future as Grubb reveals that they are investing heavily in something that’s not a studio acquisition. Check out the “Not an acquisition” part of the video below:
Bungie, the creator of Xbox’s most signature video game franchise, once was a part of Microsoft Studios. The studio managed to deliver five iterations of the Halo series in seven years, including the first trilogy, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach. In 2007, Bungie parted ways with Microsoft and signed a new 10-year publishing deal with Activision in 2010, which resulted in the creation of Destiny as a new IP from Bungie.
Later in 2019, Bungie revealed that they wouldn’t continue their partnership with Activision, and would try to be an independent company to publish their own titles. Since then, the studio has revealed multiple expansions for Destiny 2, with one of the biggest ones arriving on November 10th as a launch title for Xbox Series X and S. Destiny 2 and all its expansions will arrive on Xbox Game Pass at launch, based on a recent deal between Bungie and Microsoft.
This recent partnership between Microsoft and Bungie ignited some rumors around the acquisition of the studio for the second time by the Xbox owners. Although it might eventually happen someday, at least now we know that Microsoft has tried multiple times to make it happen.
