LG Electronics has introduced the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier that has two H13 HEPA filters similar to the filters used in the air purifier products from the company.
The company says in its press release the “LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier resolves the dilemma of homemade masks being of inconsistent quality and disposal masks being in short supply.”
“The PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier is an exciting addition to our growing lineup of products designed to deliver meaningful health and hygiene benefits,” said Dan Song, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company in a press release. “At a time when consumers are seeking ways to make life safer and more convenient, it’s important that we’re able to offer solutions that add measurable value.”
It fits snugly on the person’s face around the nose and chin and can be worn for hours on end. The 820mAh battery offers up to eight hours of operation in low mode and two hours on high.
“With its Dual Fans and patented Respiratory Sensor, LG’s wearable air purifier allows users to take in clean, filtered air while the Respiratory Sensor detects the cycle and volume of the wearer’s breath and adjusts the dual three-speed fans accordingly. The fans automatically speed up to assist air intake and slow down to reduce resistance when exhaling to make breathing effortless,” the press release says.
According to reporting from the Verge Thursday, however, “It’s important to note, however, that LG’s press release doesn’t make any claims about the mask slowing the spread of the coronavirus, including whether it filters air as you exhale as well as inhale. LG declined to comment to The Verge when we asked about this directly, and said that it was waiting until certification and testing is complete to give full details. It’s an important distinction, since masks are as much about preventing the wearer from infecting those around them as they are about helping to stop the wearer from being infected.”
“Studies on the new coronavirus and other germs show wearing a mask helps stop infected people from spreading disease to others. Evidence also suggests that masks may offer some protection for the people wearing them,” an Associated Press story reported Thursday.
