Of the many features of this update, we will be looking at the updates in terms of customization. We will be discussing how to customize the app and home screen of your phone running on iOS 14.
There are apps you constantly use, those you moderately use and those you rarely use. The essence of technology is to ensure efficiency. It will not be efficient if you have to scroll through many apps you hardly use before you get to the ones you use. iOS 14 now allows you to bypass the stress.
The new iOS 14 app library contains all the apps you have installed on your phone. You can always find your apps here instead of having them clouding your home screen. Also, to hide apps you hardly use, press and hold down your home screen. This will enable the “jiggle mode.” When in jiggle mode, you will see the “X” icon on your apps. Click on the “X” icon on the apps you want to hide. The apps will not appear on your home screen but you can find them in your app library.
Instead of hiding your apps one by one, you can hide a home screen. In the jiggle mode, you can select the home screens you want to hide or keep. The hidden apps can always be found in your app library. This method is faster than hiding one app at a time. All you need is put all the apps you want to hide in the same home screen.
The introduction of widgets did ensure efficiency in phone usage. You can easily set your alarm, reminder or add a note without having to open the app itself. The all-new iOS 14 takes the use and customization of widgets to a whole new level.
Press and hold down your home screen. This will activate the “jiggle mode” as stated earlier. In the jiggle mode, you will notice a “+” sign at the top of your phone screen. Click on the “+” sign and you will see all the available widgets you can use. This includes widgets of Apple’s apps and third-party apps.
Click on the widget you want to use and add it to your home screen. You can also adjust the size of the widget to your taste. However, you cannot resize certain widgets. Some widgets come in fixed sizes of 2 × 2, 2 × 4, etc.
This is a cool new feature as it encourages a higher level of personalization. It also involves the use of an additional app. To be able to change the icons of your apps, you will need to install the “shortcuts” app. This app is free. After installing the shortcut app, you can launch it and follow these steps.
After launching the app, click on the “+” icon in the top left corner of your screen to create a new shortcut. Click on “Add Action”, and select the apps you want to customize. When you have done this, you can choose the app that your shortcut will open. Click the “…” icon in the top right corner of your phone screen. It will provide you with options to add a custom icon and name the icon. This will help you identify the shortcut on your home screen.
After customizing the shortcut of the app, you will have to add it to your home screen. Click on “Add to home screen” to have a specialized icon waiting for you on your home screen.
