For many fantasy fans, Dungeons and Dragons was the gateway into years of rolling dice and telling stories together with their friends. Some of those players came into role-playing games through another doorway. HeroQuest was a board game that featured many of the same trappings as D&D: devious traps, sword swinging heroes and magical treasure hidden away in a dungeon. Today, Hasbro announced a new edition of HeroQuest on the horizon through Hasbro Pulse, its collector/crowdfunding platform. As of this writing, the game has already hit $250, 000 in preorders, a quarter of their fundraising goal.

The original HeroQuest was a massive board game released by Milton Bradley in 1989. It was an attempt to break into the fantasy gaming market that was long dominated by Dungeons & Dragons. Milton Bradley partnered with Games Workshop, a massive miniatures company to give the game a unique look. Players took on the role of one of four characters to battle against the villain player who controlled the monsters and chose the scenario to run using the pieces included on the board. Several expansion packs were released through the 90s and even though producing stopped by the mid-90s, fans have kept the game alive on line through additional scenarios, new rules and expansions and even a few apps that mimic the board game by using similar rules sets and aesthetics. This has also kept prices high on the secondary market with unopened boxes going for hundreds of dollars.

The new HeroQuest looks to keep that same look, though the miniatures will feature a different look to avoid infringing on Games Workshop IP. There are alternate sculpts of each of the four heroes for players who want to play a barbarian woman or an elf male. The game also has 3d furniture sculpts to replace the cardboard constructions of the earlier game. It’s unclear whether the game system will stay the same or if the designers will tweak gameplay for a more modern feel. For fans who are already into D&D, the miniatures alone make this a purchase to consider along with a game that might hook those friends who aren’t quite yet ready to commit to a full campaign.

There are currently two Heroquest preorder levels available through HasLab, the Hasbro Pulse crowdfunding platform. The base game is available for $100 and included a massive amount of plastic miniatures for the heroes, villains and set pieces. The mythic tier at $150 features reboots of two classic expansions included: Return of the Witch Lord and Kellar’s Keep. These expansions add more miniatures and story options to the mix. Both tiers include exclusive miniatures only available during the crowdfunding campaign, with the Mythic Tier including potential stretch goals like extra dice, new villain sculpts and a new warlock hero added to the mix.

There have been other dungeon crawl board games that have come out since the original but the combination of a classic brand name and nostalgia will certainly lure the curious to check out this new version. The pre-order shuts down on November 6th, 2020 and the game moves into production when it hits its funding goal of $1,000,000.

I am a game designer with over 15 years worth of game credits and industry experience. My work includes licensed games based on worlds like Star Wars, Star Trek and Firefly, classic game worlds like Dungeons & Dragons and Shadowrun and my own creations like Camelot Trigger and Save Game. I play a wide variety of games as part of Theatre of the Mind Players and have been the guest of honor at several conventions. I live with my family in Wisconsin, born near the heart of RPGs (and just a few short years younger than they are).
