The purchase of Bethesda by Microsoft has been one of the most impressive moves in the industry in its recent time, just the thought of a transaction for $ 7,500 million to take over studios and franchises reflects the ambitions of the games division of the North American company. Obviously, what was announced early in the morning struck a chord with PlayStation fans, who responded in a peculiar way.
Months ago, rumors arose that indicated the alleged purchase of different Konami IPs by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which would open the possibility of seeing legendary franchises such as Metal Gear, Castlevania and Silent Hill back, This caused that in the previous one to each event, the most seasoned fans were looking forward to the events of PlayStation to confirm that this was reality. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and the desire was lost with the passage of time. However, the purchase operation that involved Xbox and Bethesda reactivated the idea of Sony doing the same with Konami and the issue became a trend in networks.
After Xbox announced with great fanfare the purchase of Bethesda – which means that franchises such as DOOM, Wolfenstein, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Dishonored and The Evil Within, among others, are under the control of Microsoft – PlayStation fans they met in networks and demanded that Sony respond immediately with the purchase of Konami.
The context was right for the petition to escalate in networks and the name of the Japanese company was placed in trends with tens of thousands of mentions of those who had something to say, for or against, of the purchase proposal.
While the rumors sparked hope that Sony and PlayStation could bring Konami’s flagship franchises back, the reality is that the Japanese company has denied all information about it. Furthermore, it is known that even though Konami’s gaming division is not a priority, its IPs continue to enjoy success in its Pachinko machine business, so there is no logical reason to get rid of them. Likewise, and despite how painful this is, neither Castlevania, nor Metal Gear, nor Silent Hill, are a guarantee of a good business today, just look at the collapse of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, whose spending on development never matched sales expectations.
Finally, perspective cannot be lost regarding the size of Microsoft and Sony as companies, since the North American is one of the richest in the world and can invest more strongly in any of its divisions. On the other hand, the Japanese company, far from its heyday, needs to make smart purchases that guarantee the profitability of its operations.
