Games Workshop has furthered the Warhammer Age of Sigmar narrative with the pending release of Broken Realms

It should come as no surprise that two years on from the launch of AoS second edition that GW would be set to tease the future for its popular tabletop war game. Love it or hate it, GW has long had a history of renewing its games. Despite the occasional mishap, the response has been favorable since the move to narrative-driven expansions. This will usually be over several expansions that form a campaign story arc, with players re-enacting the key battles. This also allows GW to release new units and refresh its ranges.

For example, earlier this year Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition was released to much fanfare with a limited edition box, while fantasy skirmish board game Warcry: Catacombs has just launched, taking the fight beneath the Eightpoints.

Those familiar with Age of Sigmar lore will have followed the events of the Soul Wars closely. The announcement of Broken Realms ties all the loose ends together. As the conflict rages on, the Mortal realms are ensnared by Chaos that has shattered the fragile status quo. The outlook is grim as every faction fights for their survival. The first of the Broken Realms books, Morathi, covers her desire to reach Godhood. This has long been planned and now it is time to make her move. No doubt the other factions will respond in kind, and her actions will have far-reaching consequences for the Daughters of Khaine and friend and foe alike.

Each release will no doubt feature new rules and units, with Daughters of Khaine, Cities of Sigmar, Stormcast Eternals, Slaves to Darkness, and Idoneth Deepkin slated for updates in Broken Realms: Morathi. You’ll also find plenty of lore, a few surprises, and plenty of battleplans to relive the core conflicts that underpin the narrative.

No date has been given for the release of Broken Realms: Morathi, but a new trailer gives us a few hints at what we can expect. This and more can be found on the new Broken Realms website. Visitors are encouraged to sign up for the Warhammer newsletter. Subscribers will receive regular updates on GW releases and free AoS fiction every fortnight – days before it will appear online.
