It seems as if the floodgates have opened for cloud game releases on the Nintendo Switch. Following on from the announcement of Hitman 3 and the release of Control on the eShop, dataminers have now supposedly uncovered evidence of Capcom’s Resident Evil 3 remake coming to the hybrid system via cloud technology.
This information apparently comes from the Control: Cloud Version website. Industry analyst, Daniel Ahmad, previously said there were “no plans” for a native version of the game “right now”, but a cloud version was being explored, and there’s now seemingly evidence of this.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a Resident Evil game come to the Nintendo Switch via the cloud. While Capcom has released the majority of its games in digital form on the Switch, a cloud version of Biohazard 7 (aka Resident Evil 7) was previously released in Japan in 2018.

When he’s not paying off a loan to Tom Nook, Liam likes to report on the latest Nintendo news and admire his library of video games. His favourite Nintendo character used to be a guitar-playing dog, but nowadays he prefers to hang out with Judd the cat.
Well it’s better than nothing. Not ideal and somewhat damning for the future of third-party releases but I’d sure take this over no port at all.
As much as I wanted a native port of RE2 or 3 just for the technical miraculousness of it-especially since MH Rise is using the RE Engine-(alongside an excuse for buying RE2 again, I love that game)… I had a feeling this was coming. Disappointed, but not surprised.
I’m all for it. It was going to be harder and harder for Nintendo to get good ports in the next generation anyway.
I’m not delighted by cloud based gaming, but if it’s the mechanism that gets current gen titles on aging system not designed for horsepower… I could make peace with it.
@Muddy_4_Ever Absolutely no chance any game goes cloud-based that doesn’t completely necessitate it. It locks out too much of the market who have crap internet and/or actually use their Switch portably. Nintendo might make regular questionable business decisions but surely they can’t go that far!
For a second I thought that it meant the Original PlayStation game and I was about to RIOT
For all those people it appeals to, I’m happy for them. It’s not for me though.
Meh it’s in the cloud so not that exciting. All this prove is that Stadia could also work on the Switch too.
@Cevil You’re gonna have a lot of money saved up pretty soon. The glorious digital era is upon us! Better start finding a new hobby!
Bwahahaha! The ancient ways of the cart are dying! It’s time for a new era to reign supreme! Bwhahahaha!
Cloud based gaming is a crock of crap; give me the full game or not at all. I was excited for Control and Hitman on Switch but after hearing it’s only available through the aforementioned cloud, I’ll be skipping them and getting them for PS4/PS5 instead. What a wasted opportunity.
After playing the demo of control, I’m all for it. Didn’t notice any issues, even with the crap Switch wifi. This really opens up the possibility of xcloud. And I for one would be all over that. Might even pick up hitman if it gets discounted at some point.
Another datamine article.
If I was the boss of NintendoLife I would never pay my employee for publishing this kind of “cheap” articles.
I simply can’t understand why would someone pay so much to play a cloud game…Control costs 34.99£… 34.99£ for a game that doesn’t belong to you. At any moment they can’t take the game out of the servers and bye bye 34.99£. And isn’t this trusting too much on the fact that Nintendo believes the Switch is used in docked mode? I barely docked my Switch since i bought it, and this totally kills the “portable” portion of it.
@0blivion j can’t agree more. Man, i was nearly jumping of happiness until i saw “cloud”. I’m 33 and i felt like a kid who got socks for Christmas instead of what he really wanted. XD
OofI’d be fine with cloud versions if those weren’t full price purchasesMaaybe if it was pretty cheap or part of a subscription-service then I’d give it a go
Well, either every demanding game will be on the cloud for switch from now on, or Nintendo will finally have the balls to announce the switch pro to make next gen porting easier
A lot of people here are going to need to find a new hobby soon.
I was all physical at the start of this generation, but it’s either move with it or miss out on just enjoying myself.
Buying games that stream isn’t a sustainable model, this is just opening the door to games as a service on Switch and it’s coming.
Be it xCloud, Stadia, Luna, whatever, one of them will come.
I don’t really get why anyone would be opposed to it. If you don’t like it, don’t get it. But it’s a choice for those who only have a Switch and no way in hell is Switch running these games natively (without major sacrifice, if even then). Even an upgraded Switch 2 won’t be close to PS5/XBX. Brings games to people who may not otherwise be able to….not a bad thing, considering a lot of gamers are consumers – they consume a game, then are done with it. This could work for them.
