Google Home looks finally set to get the upgrade it deserves with the Californian firm set to reveal its latest smart speaker redesign at an event tomorrow evening. The original Google Home was first unveiled back in November 2016 and it’s not had a lick of paint since that date. Luckily it appears the wait is finally over with a new Google Home, rumoured to be called Google Nest Audio, looking almost certain to replace the current Google Home speaker and bring a new look and improved sound system.
Google has already confirmed that a new music maker is on its way as part of the invite to its event on Wednesday, September 30, which states: “We invite you to learn all about our new Chromecast, our smart speakers and our new Pixel phones.”
And, to add fuel to the fire, the tech firm has also teased its upcoming boombox with a video showing how this device could look. The short clip gives three hints about what’s to come: a new pastel blue colour and the ability to use this boxed-shaped speaker in both a landscape or portrait mode.
This unique design is similar to that already found on the pricier Google Home Max speaker, which can be laid flat or stood up on its end making it more versatile. Two speakers can be paired together and stood side-by-side for true stereo audio too, although it’s unclear whether that feature will make the leap to the Google Nest Audio.
Another thing that’s been spotted in the video is that it seemingly shows the speaker being picked up and moved around the home without any power cable being attached. This could mean Google is planning to include a battery pack inside the speaker to make it more portable.
That’s an update we all want to see but before you get too excited about a battery-powered Google Home it’s worth noting that there’s also plenty of leaked images that show the device with a chunky white power cord placed firmly its back so we’ll have to wait and see if this portability becomes a reality.
Other upgrades that are bound to feature could include improved and louder sound plus better voice-controlled smart features.
As always, these are only rumours and unconfirmed leaks for now, but there’s just over a day to go until all is revealed.
