Sony has shown off an extended gameplay trailer for PS5 exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and it will be out a lot sooner than expected.

When Sony unveiled their games line-up for the PlayStation 5 there were plenty of great looking titles but very few that were confirmed as out this year, thanks to the coronavirus.

Given that it’s the perfect showcase for how the SSD can change next gen game design, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was clearly originally intended to be a launch game but while that’s no longer the case it will be out within the PlayStation 5’s ‘launch window’.

Launch window can mean whatever a publisher wants it to mean, but typically it implies the first month or so after the console’s release, up to a limit of around three months.

So if you assume the PlayStation 5 will be released somewhere between mid-November and mid-December there’s a reasonable chance Ratchet & Clank could be out this year and it should definitely be out before the end of February or early March at the very latest.

That’s a welcome surprise and could mean that other games shown during the unveil, such as Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 are closer than assumed too. Although officially the only confirmed launch titles remain Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro’s Playroom.

As for Rift Apart, the new gameplay trailer was shown during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event and is an extension of the same demo shown back in June, from what seems to be the very beginning of the game.

The graphics look fantastic (although Ratchet’s face looks a bit weird, almost like something out of Cats) but it’s the portal effects that demonstrate the speed of the SSD and which the game has clearly been designed around.

There seem to be two main types, with Ratchet grappling onto orange portals to instantly teleport himself through them – to get to new areas or outflank enemies.

Meanwhile, the purple portals take you to completely different areas and planets or drop enemies out of them.

With the purple portals there’s a second or two during the switch where all you can see is abstract shapes, but whether that’s being used to mask the loading or is a purposeful addition to prevent disorientation remains to be seen. But either way it’s clearly not something that could be done with current console technology.
