The new MacBook Air, unveiled Tuesday 10 November, takes the design of the old one, but adopts the new home processor Apple M1 using the ARM architecture and allowing to decouple the performance of the beast as well as its autonomy.

Apple has just unveiled its first computer equipped with the in-house Apple M1 processor which marks the change in architecture. Apple company abandons Intel and x86 instructions for in-house processors, using ARM instructions, already used on iPhones and iPads. Without surprise, it's the MacBook Air that gets the ball rolling. The design remains unchanged, just like the connection, with just two ports that are no longer just USB-C ports, but Thunderbolt 3 / USB connectors 4. This MacBook Air inherits a new screen 13 inch Retina (2 560 x 1 600 px) True Tone (automatic adjustment of the color temperature according to the ambient light) which now covers the DCI-P3 color space. In terms of performance, Apple assures that the Apple M1 processor is 3,5 times faster than MacBook Air 2020 (base) while the graphic part would be 5 times faster. Obviously, it will be necessary to wait for the first tests to really judge the performance of the Apple home processor, but the Californian society seems particularly confident.

The two biggest advancements are probably the absence of a fan and the autonomy brought to 15 hours in normal use and even 18 hours of video playback. This isn't the first Mac to come without a fan, there had been the G4 Cube and more recently the MacBook Retina withdrawn from sale in July 2019. The absence of a fan allows this new MacBook Air to run in total silence. Moreover, it highlights the low consumption of the Apple M1 processor. Autonomy can reach 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing. In comparison, with MacBook Air 2020 displayed 12 hours of video playback and 11 hours of web browsing with the same battery 49,9 Wh, proof that it is optimization that allows you to gain autonomy. FaceTime camera remains unchanged and still limited to 720p, but the processor should allow to improve the image quality thanks to a more efficient processing (in particular by using the hearts dedicated to artificial intelligence called Neural Engine).
As for the audio part, nothing changes. There are three microphones with ambient noise reduction technology, stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos certification and always (phew !) a headphone output in mini-jack format. The dimensions remain unchanged with 30,41 x 21,24 x 0,41 Ã 1,61 cm for a weight of 1,29 kg. We are far from 920 grams of MacBook Retina, but the power is quite different. Good news, le Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax makes its appearance, bluetooth is always on version 5.0. On the security side, the processor has a secure enclave and authentication is always done via the Touch ID fingerprint sensor located at the top right of the Magic Keyboard.
Apple has not addressed the differences between the two MacBook Air models offered for sale.. In addition to the capacity of the SSD which goes from 256 à 512 Go, the high-end MacBook Air has an Apple M1 processor with an à 8 hearts against 7 only for the base MacBook Air. It will be necessary to see if the difference in performance is really noticeable in use. Apple also does not communicate on the frequencies of the processor that â ???? we hope so â ???? should be identical on both models. With MacBook Air “M1” basic with 8 GB of unified memory and an SSD of 256 Go is sold 1 129 â ?? ¬ while the version with an additional GPU core and an SSD of 512 Go is billed 1 399 â??¬. Orders are now open for delivery from 17 November 2020.
