Mourners took to the streets as the funeral procession for former racing driver the Marquis of Bute took place in London this afternoon

John Crichton-Stuart, who also went through John Bute and was a close friend of Prince Charles, died of cancer at the age of 62 years on 22 mars.

He spent much of his time on his eponymous Scottish island, in his ancestral home, Mount Stuart, and chaired the board of directors of the Mount Stuart Trust since 2005

The 7th Marquis, formerly ranked 616th in the rich list, was also a Formula driver 1 in 1986 while partnering with Ayrton Senna and racing as Johnny Dumfries

The funeral procession passed through North Kensington before being buried in Kensal Green Cemetery this afternoon

Photos show the coffin being transported in a Chevrolet pickup truck 3100 classic and was followed by a motorcade of classic American cars

Besides his wife Serena, his daughter Lola and other family members, Also in attendance were makeup mogul Charlotte Tilbury, beauty entrepreneur Trinny Woodall as well as British models Adwoa Aboah and Lady Mary Charteris and musician Robbie Furze

The former racing driver, who has already won the coveted British F3 Championship, was passionate about restoring and driving classic American cars.

In an interview with Motorsport Magazine earlier this year, the Marquis explained how he bought a Cadillac Coupe Fastback Series 62 of 1949 who toured London and was part of the procession.

He also discussed driving the classic Chevrolet pickup from 1954 when he needed to move around the capital.

The man from 62 years, whose ancestral family home is Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute, said his favorite memory of racing was winning the F3 championship in 1984. He retired from sports in 1991

In a statement released after his death, his family released a statement this afternoon describing him as a “ big, dad, brother, uncle, devoted and loved son and grandfather ”

He said: “ The indomitable spirit and energy that Johnny brought to his life will be sorely missed., as well as the immense warmth and love with which he embraced his family.

‘His heart was firmly rooted in the Isle of Bute where he spent much of his time

‘Johnny has chaired the board of directors of Mount Stuart Trust since its active inauguration in 2005 when Mount Stuart and its gardens were opened to the public, and his rural estate was invested in the charitable trust

‘He was a modernizer and an inspiring thinker, making the transition from a family home to a progressive and active facility and estate for visitors

«Its island projects include internationally renowned Bute Fabrics and, more recently, the Kerrylamont Rural Center of Excellence and Bute Yard He was a philanthropist through his foundation, with a particular focus on Scotland and the west coast
