US probe orbiting Mars has detected something strange on the surface of the red planet. A deep crater in the form of a black spot of about 180 meters in diameter appeared on images taken by the orbiter, CNET reported on 21 February This could be the entrance to a network of caves
After adjusting the brightness of the image taken on 24 January by HiRise camera, the results surprised the University of Arizona team. Photographs taken from the Mars Exploration Vehicle (MRO) revealed a huge cavity, the origin of which is still uncertain. The crater would have been connected to a network of underground tunnels, left behind by fast-flowing lava channels – similar to those in Volcanoes National Park.
«Our hope is to determine if this is an isolated crater or a tunnel entrance, like the« bouches »lava tubes in Hawaii», explains NASA geophysicist Rossbayer, «We can't see any tunnel in the visible walls, but they could be in other walls not visible in the photo
The interest in this discovery is great. In fact, some of these supposed caves could be large enough to house entire planetary bases, thus offering future human settlers protection against the harsh environment of the surface of Mars, in particular its radiations. Other potential shelters have already been identified in 2012, for example, MRO captured footage of suspected cave entrances until 225 meters in diameter.
