The PS5 may be one of the hardest items to find right now, but even those who are lucky enough to have one are faced with objects of their own with unique problems.
Post-launch shortcomings range from rest mode errors to complete GPU failures, but one of the loopholes that has recently attracted a lot of attention is the so-called “DualSense drift”
Just like Nintendo's Joy-Con game before it, it seems that some of Sony's new analog sticks tend to record movements incorrectly, which causes entries to be recorded when pressed for a long time after the user has stopped tilting the arm that the subject has reached. its peak at a time earlier this week, when IGN was the first to report that Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP filed a class action lawsuit against Sony in hopes of finding a solution for affected players.
Although a glimpse on the Internet indicates that DualSense is not as popular as the Joy-Con Drift, probably due to differences in the design of the controllers, a new video from iFixit on YouTube offers what seems plausible to explain the problem on PS5 and any other remote control in the mass market and now that we apparently understand the root cause, there can be several ways to avoid it
To summarize the iFixit video, the clip reveals that most of the major consoles – from DualSense on PS5 to DualShock 4 on PS4, many Xbox consoles and even a Nintendo Switch Pro controller – all use the RKJXV joystick from a company called Alps Alpine as the control of all arms, This gauge has a potentiometer that measures the position of the stick as it follows a semicircular motion There is also a spring that returns the stick to its central state when the player releases the tension Source video suggests the presence of these two parts in the stick itself and could be the main culprit for any drift in the controller
The first way the potentiometer or spring can get stuck is through the use of gameplay and it turns out that the sticks inside the DualSense controller are not designed to last for many sessions.. The official RKJXV data sheet indicates a lifespan of 2 million travel cycles. And 500 000 cycles by pressing the L3 and R3 stick buttons of the iFixit analysis, this equates to approximately 400 hours of casual play as it is not uncommon for a single triple A title to last 100 hours, we can see how easy it can be to reach this point very quickly once this point is crossed, then the drift can start either to wear the potentiometer, either to extend the spring to a point where its central value becomes incorrect in both cases, your character or pointer keeps moving when it shouldn't.
Other than basic use, another possible cause of drift is the environment. Controls are high impact objects that are roughly manipulated by nature. If dust particles, food or other debris makes its way through the sticks, the potentiometer is likely to take incorrect readings in other words., The parts inside the DualSense controller are not designed for the type of typing it will face, whether in terms of game use or in everyday life.
The actual fixes for the DualSense drift will likely be out of reach for most casual users., so the best option is to start taking action to prevent this from happening in the first place. Pay attention to other factors for example, frequently clean the outside of your consoles so that particles do not penetrate as far from the floor, away from sofa cushions and your pets.
These suggestions may sound like common sense, but almost all gamers are guilty of launching consoles with a kind of reckless negligence that doesn't seem to fit inside. Maybe hardware makers should use the looser sticks and allow players to easily replace them, but that's not the reality we live in. Those who currently have drift can try to get a DualSense alternative through warranty or use the individual settings options in the game to adjust the sensitivity to overcome its negative effect. With it all in mind, you may need to get used to using your DualSense device
