GMC is packing a lot of technology into its upcoming 1,000-horsepower electric truck, which will revive the Hummer name.
The latest innovation is using a computer graphics generator usually used for video games to power its infotainment display.
Yes, the GMC Hummer will implement the Unreal Engine, created by Epic Games, for the basis of its infotainment system.
The engine will be largely helpful regarding things like quick startup time, higher-frame-rate graphics, over-the-air updates, and perhaps even Tesla-style actual video games built in to the system.
The Unreal Engine is usually used for video games, and has been around since 1998 when it debuted in the first-person shooter Unreal, and again in Unreal Tournament. The engine is now used for a lot more than video games, and expects to launch its latest version, Unreal Engine 5, in late 2021.
We don’t expect Unreal Engine 5 to be used on the Hummer’s infotainment, as that kind of computing power would probably require all of the vehicles battery power, as well. The Hummer will likely run some version of Unreal Engine 4 instead.
A lot more will be known when the vehicle is revealed in full come October 20, 2020.
