Ahead of Apple’s ‘One More Thing’ event this Tuesday and the expected release of the first ARM-powered Mac machines, there are two big questions that many are hoping will be answered. One of those is the ability of macOS on ARM to run macOS apps developed for the Intel-based Macs; the second is how much performance Apple’s new ARM chips will have.

Apple is expected to use its A14X processor inside the new MacBook Pro and MacBook laptops. The A14 family has debuted in the iPhone 12 handsets, and the A14X variant is also expected to be the heart of the iPad Pro when the 2021 variant is announced early next year. But how does it compare with the current Intel processors in the Macs?

Benchmarks have shown up on the popular Geekbanch suite, with hardware running the A14X listed. Wesley Hillard has more:

The alleged CPU benchmarks for theA14Xshow a 1.80GHz processor capable of turbo-boosting to 3.10GHz marking this the first custom Apple Silicon to ever clock above 3GHz. It is an 8-core processor with big-little arrangement. The GPU results show 8GB of RAM will be included with the processor.

The single-core benchmark for theA14X” scored 1634 vs the A12Z at 1118. The A14 scored 1,583 points for single-core tests, which is expected as single-core results shouldn’t change much between the regular and “X” models.

How does that stack up with the Intel MacBooks? Very well! The current 16-inch MacBook Pro is benchmarked at 1096 for a single core, and 6869 for multiple-core.

This is purely about the processing grunt, moving to ARM has many other advantages including a lower power drain on the battery; running at a lower temperature which eliminates the need for aggressive cooling; and of course not being reliant on Intel’s production and design schedule.

No doubt Apple will lean heavily into some of these benchmarking scores when the hardware is presented. And I’ve no doubt that when the hardware reaches consumers, there will be even more benchmarking and tests to find out just how good the ARM is in terms of power.

Right now the numbers look good, but once the machines hit the real world we’ll know for sure.
