Nest has started to enable two-factor authentication by default on all accounts this week, so make sure you have access to the email associated with your Nest account.

Following news that Nest security cameras were being hacked in the US earlier this year, Nest has now started enabling two-factor authentication by default for accounts. The change was announced several months ago, but the implementation is taking place as of this week.

As a result, Â all Nest users who haven’t already enrolled in two-factor authentication, or migrated to a Google account will need to take an extra step by verifying their identity. The verification process involves being sent a six-digit code via email, so users will need to be sure they have access to the email address that is associated with their Nest account.

Previously, Nest users were not required to use two-step authentication but due to a spate of publicized Nest camera “hacks” earlier this year, the company says this will now be required and default on all accounts. The aforementioned “hacks” were not due to a security lapse, but rather users re-using their passwords for multiple accounts.

By adding two-factor authentication Nest will significantly reduce any likelihood of an unauthorized person accessing Nest accounts, even if they have a user’s username and password.
