All Mojang titles are affected
Owned by Microsoft since its acquisition for 2,5 billion in 2014, Mojang announces that you will now need a Microsoft account to play its games, all as much as they are.
You like Mojang's productions ? You will now need a Microsoft account to play it. This is what the Swedish studio acquired in September said. 2014 by the redmond giant. This change affects all of its games, including Minecraft Java Edition, specified Mojang. The measure is also mandatory for players who previously used a Mojang account or a Minecraft Legacy account to log in.
As GamesIndustry specifies, this measure will ultimately prevent recalcitrant players from connecting, and will gradually begin to take effect early 2021. Waiting, users wishing to create a Mojang account will be, starting this fall, invited to create a Microsoft account instead.
We also learn that players who already have a Microsoft account can simply merge it with their Mojang account.. On the other hand, things get more complex for those with, for example, several accounts on Minecraft Java Edition : they will need to link each of these accounts to an independent Microsoft account. A real puzzle, As far as this merger may have an impact on their username. The latter will indeed have to be replaced by another if it is already in use, Mojang, however, assures that the matter will not impact their in-game nickname..
To assist players in this transition, Mojang provides them with a complete FAQ. The studio also said it would send emails to explain the procedure to its community.. Video tutorials are also planned on YouTube.
This transition is justified by increased security, since Microsoft accounts notably benefit from two-factor identification. The possibility of configuring better parental controls is also invoked by Mojang.
" Currently, this concerns Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons, but who knows what we'll do next ? », indicated the studio. "Think of it as a move ; when you [leave behind a place], you move on. This implies a logistical effort, but once you are settled in your new home, you realize you would do it ten times just for that extra room ”.
This change comes anyway a few months after Microsoft announced that it had globally passed the bar. 200 million copies of Minecraft sold, recalls GamesIndustry.
