Life Science Centre will put on a fancy dress competition and Halloween outings for families as a safe alternative to trick-or-treat

A fancy dress competition and outings for young witches and ghouls are on offer this Halloween as an alternative to trick-or-treating.

Life Science Centre is inviting visitors of all ages to turn up dressed in spooky outfits, such as warlocks, vampires and monsters, over half-term week.

And children can enter a prize competition to find the best fancy dress outfit for a chance to win a free visit to the Newcastle attraction over Christmas.

The idea is to give families a safe Halloween experience given that the pandemic has spoiled their usual trick-or-treating plans and the venue is also currently running a Spooky Science show which is proving such a hit with visitors that its run is set to continue for three more weeks after the November 1 end of the half-term break.

Linda Conlon, Life’s chief executive, said: “Families are understandably anxious about trick-or-treating this year, so we’ve put together a fun Halloween experience in the science centre.

With significantly reduced visitor numbers, a one-way route and lots of cleaning and sanitising, we can offer a Covid-secure experience.

The fancy dress competition is running on Instagram and will remain open to enter until midday on November 5.

Visitors are being asked to take a selfie in their fancy dress costume during their trip to Life and to post it on Instagramusing the hashtag #LifeSpookySciencethen the person with the most likes on their post by the deadline will win a return trip to the centre during the school Christmas holidays, when it is planning a special festive programme.

Spooky Science is part of its current half-term Halloween programme and marks the first live show to take place there since lockdown.

The live show has acampfire storytelling vibeand explores things that go bump in the night and why it is often your own imagination that spooks you the most.

Visitors are enjoying it so much that Life has now decided to continue it beyond half-term, on weekends only until November 15.

Linda said the venue is luckier than most in that it has plenty of space for social distancing, with large rooms normally used for meetings and events.

She said: “We want everyone to be safe and to feel comfortable so we’ve reimagined some of our spaces in these strange times.

For the science show, we’re using the big conferencing suite that usually hosts weddings and Christmas parties so that the audience can be socially-distanced.
