Study reveals new biofluorescent mammal under ultraviolet light : l’ornithorynque. In other words, this funny animal "glows in the dark". According to the researchers, it would be an evolutionary adaptation to the nightlife.

L’ornithorynque (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), real weirdness of nature, continues to surprise us. It’s not enough for him to be a mammal that lays eggs, to wear a “duckbill” and webbed legs, or to hunt by electroreception… No, the platypus also glows under ultraviolet light.

The capacities of biofluorescence and bioluminescence are developed in many other organisms. Let's mention the mushrooms, the fish, phytoplankton, reptiles or amphibians. However, in mammals, coat biofluorescence under ultraviolet light has only been documented in some opossums and in placental flying squirrels. The platypus therefore joins a very exclusive club. In addition, it is the only known monotreme, or laying mammal, able to succeed in this trick. Details of this study are published in the journal Mammalia.

Biologist Paula Spaeth Anich, of Northland College, is the one who discovered biofluorescence in flying squirrels (Last year). The discovery was made by accident during nocturnal lichen surveys. Field observations were then confirmed with analysis of museum specimens.

Platypuses being like flying squirrels and opossums of so-called nocturnal-crepuscular animals, Paula Spaeth Anich and her team therefore investigated whether the monotreme was also capable of biofluorescence..

In this spirit, researchers put three museum specimens under UV (two males and one female) coming from the Field Museum of Natural History of Chicago and the University of Nebraska State Museum. The platypus being a near threatened species, with a declining demographic trend, researchers preferred to focus on stuffed specimens.

Result : if we know that under visible light platypus fur naturally appears brown, on the other hand, their fur here appeared “green” or “cyan” under ultraviolet light.

As Kassiopée Toscas points out for Science&Life, "Biofluorescent animals absorb light waves of short length (between 200 and 400 nanometers), like UV, and re-emit longer wavelengths (between 500 and 600 nanometers). Result : we perceive them in other shades ".

Researchers point out that both males and female exhibited this characteristic. In other words, it would not be a sexual dimorphism. According to biologists, rather it would be an evolutionary adaptation to low light conditions.

Their “shiny” fur, Firstly, could be a way for these animals to see and interact with each other at night. Absorbing ultraviolet light, on the other hand, might also help them camouflage themselves from UV-sensitive predators. In other words, sending back longer waves could go unnoticed by those more comfortable with shorter waves.

Naturally, the small size of the sample today cannot allow this type of conclusion. Field research will therefore be necessary to try to understand why the platypus has developed such a capacity..
