The latest Unearthed Arcana article is bringing new playtesting options for D&D Fifth Edition, with Monks and Rangers getting some draconic flavor. Wizards of the Coast released their latest playtesting document on Monday, introducing the Way of the Ascendant Dragon for Monks and Drakewarden for Rangers. You can check out the PDF here.
The Way of the Ascendant Dragon represents Monks who, revering the power of dragons, have altered the essence of their ki in order to “resonate with draconic might” by whatever narrative way a player and DM might decide is possible. Ascendant Dragon Monks are able to change their damage types from their unarmed strikes to those energy types associated with dragons (acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison) which allows them to bypass certain damage resistances or immunities. They can also use their reaction to reroll an Intimidation or Persuasion check once per long rest. As they progress, they gain a breath weapon that they can channel their ki into and single turn-use spectral wings to fly. At their highest levels they can use their ki to give their allies resistance to a type of damage and let them do damage whenever they are attacked, and finally gain an Ascendant Aspect that greatly empowers their other abilities.
Meanwhile, Drakewardens are similar to Beast Masters in that they get a companion. In this case, it is a drake that doesn’t stay with your constantly; instead it can be summoned for a number of hours but otherwise is largely similar to animal companions. As their levels increase they gain a resistance related to the type of drake they summon (i.e. a red dragon drake grants its Drakewarden fire resistance) and the drake is able to fly and do more damage if you chose to have it attack. 11th level Drakewardens get a powerful breath weapon, while at their highest subclass feature (15th level) the summoned drake is a large creature with more damage capacity and the ability to grant damage resistance.
Like all playtest material Way of the Ascendant Dragon and Drakewarden are not fully balanced yet and will likely be refined through feedback before being made official; they cannot be used in Adventurer’s League games.
