Let’s be honest: it’s not a great year for your more traditional Halloween activities. COVID-19 is spiking all across the world, and both house parties and trick-or-treating come with their own kinds of risks, even with this traditionally masked holiday. But we can always turn to another pastime that helped us get through the beginning of the pandemic, and can still help us now: Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s Halloween in the game, just as in life, and you can always go trick-or-treating there.

Halloween runs from 5:00 PM – 12:00 PM on October 31 in the game, and Isabelle will remind you this morning even before it starts.

When the festivities begin, you’ll be visited by Jack the Halloween Czar, a legitimately unnerving presence on the island. He will task you as his minion, and ask you to gather lollipops to sate his dark purposes. If you give him a piece of candy, he’ll give you “Jack’s Face” as a hat. Another one, and he’ll give you “Jack’s Robe” to complete the cosplay.

You get lollipops from giving candy out to villagers, who will be out trick or treating. When you give them candy, they will either give you a piece of spooky furniture, a recipe for some spooky furniture, or a lollipop. The furniture is mostly the same as what we’ve been seeing all month, but there are a few recipes that are unique to Halloween day:

You’ll probably get a bunch of furniture as you seek lollipops, but eventually one of the villagers will give up the goods. If they don’t want more candy in one go, just go talk to someone else and come back. You’ll notice, too, that some of your villagers are in their homes: go inside and talk to them for some bonus candy.

If you give a lollipop to Jack, he’ll reward you with the impressive Cinderella-style Spooky carriage. Another Lollipop, and he’ll give you the recipe to make your own. A third lollipop will yield the spooky wand recipe.

Those are the basics, but one more tip: if you run out of candy, put on both Jack’s Robe and Jack’s Face. You can scare the trick-or-treating villagers into giving you more candy before they realize it’s you.
