Google will now block certain types of website notifications from version 86 by Chrome. The goal is to prevent users from receiving spam from pages that feature an abusive content pattern, especially those that trick visitors into clicking malware or that collect user credentials.

Selon PJ McLachlan, product manager at Chrome, bogus notification warnings are one of the biggest complaints from browser users. With this news, the company hopes to improve the user experience and discourage website developers from abusing this feature.

Google claims the interface is exactly the same as previously announced for Chrome 84, but Chrome can now block notification permission requests when it identifies an abusive notification submission template.

When monitoring a site with this type of alert, Chrome will use Google's safe browsing blacklist service to report the behavior.

Site owners can access the Abuse Notification report through the Search Console, and will have 30 days to resolve the issue and request another review.

Google also plans that in a future version of Chrome, the browser can automatically change the permission status of notifications from “allowed” at “by default” on sites with a history of abusive alerts in order to prevent new notifications.
