Frisco fifth-grader Sharon Sara is the winner of Google’s national Doodle for Google contest — and will soon have her artwork featured on the Google homepage for millions of users to see.

The annual contest challenges school-aged children across the country to design art for the Google homepage — creative alterations to the company’s logo featured there are known as “Google Doodles.” The contest’s theme this year was “I show kindness by…”

Sara’s doodle, “Together as One,” depicts six girls of all different skin colors, hair styles and fashion choices uniting with their hands grasped with one another, highlighting the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

“I show kindness by sticking together with my friends in tough times,” Sara’s artist statement reads. “I drew people coming together and not thinking about the outside but being together because of their personality.”

Google received tens of thousand submissions from kindergarten through 12th-grade students across the country. Doodles were grouped by age: kindergarten through third grade, fourth and fifth grade, sixth and seventh grade, eighth and ninth grade and 10th through 12th grade.

The national winner was determined in multiple phases. First, judges picked 10 or more winners for each grade group — 54 in total. One finalist from each grade group was determined by a voting process open to the public, and the national winner was selected by a panel of judges.

In addition to having her artwork seen by millions, Sara will also receive a $30,000 college scholarship, and her school, Vaughn Elementary School, will receive a $50,000 technology package.
