For all the crap that 2020 has put us through, thereâs been one saving grace for gamers across all platforms: a ridiculous number of great titles have been given out for free since the start of the year. From the likes of GTA V and Civilization VI to The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game and Injustice: Gods Among Us, thereâs been something decent for everyone. Today, another brilliant classic is on the house.
While the latest addition to this list of critically acclaimed games may be nearly 20 years old, that doesnât make it any less fun. In fact, as far as unfettered joy through wanton destruction goes, things donât get much better than the multi-award-winning 2001 classic Serious Sam: The First Encounter, which is now yours for freeâbut only for a very limited time.
Thanks to GOG.com, the frantic FPS debut of Sam âSeriousâ Stoneâthink Duke Nukem, but without the rampant misogynyâis being made free for 48 hours, until 8am EST on August 26. Itâs a clever selection, given that GOG is promoting the long-awaited return of the character in Serious Sam 4 on September 24.
If the classic shooter passed you by, Serious Sam: The First Encounter was far from overlooked at the time; in fact, it was named game of the year by GameSpot, alongside the marvellous Grand Theft Auto III. It tells the story of the titular protagonistâs Terminator 2-style quest to save humanity by traveling back in time, in true âprevention is better than the cureâ fashion.
Arriving in Ancient Egypt, his sole quest is to use an exhaustive arsenal of weaponry to defeat Mental, an evil alien who wants to take over the universe, and his army of goons: everything from skeletons and one-eyed, anthropomorphic Thwomps through to âBeheaded Kamikazesââthe gameâs unforgettable, headless, screaming, suicidal humans with bombs for hands.
All you need to do is head over to GOG.com and register your account to claim your freebie. You wonât regret it.
