Fortnite’s partnership with Marvel appears to be at a peak right now. After a few years of crossover events seemingly meant to promote movies with a few guest star skins, we are about to finish out a full-on Marvel season, where every battle pass skin is from the Marvel universe and Galactus is coming to apparently eat the Fortnite island.

This may seem like the end of Fortnite’s Marvel partnership, but it’s really only the beginning according to Epic’s Donald Mustard, where this collaboration has been his brainchild for years, and it’s not anywhere close to over.

I recently listened to Mustard on the This Week in Marvel podcast, and he had a lot to say about the collaboration, including the fact that it was continuing on well into the future.

That does not necessarily mean more purely Marvel-based seasons, but I think I understand what he’s getting at here.

Mustard talks about the central “Nexus War” at the heart of the Marvel season, and the hints he’s giving seem to indicate that this is a larger storyline that I believe, involves the birth of the Metaverse. Nexus, after all means “a connected series or group.”

First, Fortnite is literally trying to be the Metaverse with its live events and in-game concerts and party modes where you can just hang out and chill. But this is the first glimpse I’ve seen that seems to indicate the actual storyline of Fortnite is trying to set up the Metaverse in terms of an actual narrative within the game. The Metaverse being where all these different IPs and characters are coming together in a single space. Hence, “Nexus War.”

The way Mustard tells it, the “Zero Point” reality-tearing moment from a few seasons ago is what “attracted” Galactus to the Fortnite island. Now, we are in a Marvel phase that is “just the start of many things we have planned for Marvel integration,” Mustard says.

But I think what’s being unsaid here is that we will start to see the blending of more and more properties. Fortnite’s own original characters are a big faction, yes, but this is a game that has had branded deals with DC, Borderlands, Stranger Things, John Wick and of course, another big Disney property, Star Wars.

What’s going on here reminds me of the point in The Dark Tower where you understand that Stephen King is trying to create a nexus of literary worlds, his own work, yes, but there end up being passing references to even Harry Potter in the series. The line between these worlds blurs, and that’s what I think Fortnite is going for here.

So yes, in the future, I think you will see Fortnite continue to use Marvel characters in its story, but I expect they will branch out to interact with other IPs. Most obvious could be Star Wars, given that they’re owned by the same company, but it’s easy to see that DC is hungry not to be left out of Fortnite’s budding Metaverse so yeah, maybe there’s a future that involves Thor and Superman and Rey teaming up to stop Galactus and Darkseid and Emperor Palpatine. That is no longer as absurd as it sounds, and there’s essentially no limit to the properties Fortnite can bring in for not just its literal Metaverse, but this growing Metaverse in-game storyline.

Marvel may be at the helm, having gotten in early and due to Mustard’s longstanding relationship with them, but they have years of content mapped out and finally the “story” seems like it has a clear direction, an attempt to merge as many disparate IPs into one universe as possible, paving the way for Fortnite as a Metaverse platform, not just a game. The Nexus is coming.
