The month of October has started and this month will put up a decent display of celestial events for users across the world. Starting from a full moon to Mercury at its greatest eastern elongation to the Draconids Meteor Shower – the October month is going to show it all. The next week will be the Draconids Meteor Shower.

The Draconids Meteor Shower will peak from October 8 to October 9 and will be visible from India. The meteor shower is also called Giacobinids and is annually one of the two major meteor showers which occur in October. The second meteor shower is the Orionids which is debris falling from the Halley’s Comet.

The Draconids gets its name from the constellation Draco the Dragon and is created when the Earth passes through the dust debris which is left behind by the comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. The comet takes about 6.6 years to circle back around the sun.

The meteor shower can be seen with the naked eyealthough dark skies is an important requirement.

The meteor shower will become visible from 1730 hours in India on Thursday till 2330 hours on Thursday. It will be visible again at 0030 hours on Friday to 0130 hours.

Here the Moon will be on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This occurs at 21:06 UTC.

The planet Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation of 25.8 degrees from the Sun. One of the best time to see Mercury considering it will be at its highest pointthe planet will be seen in the western sky just after sunset.

It is a minor meteor shower with about 10 meteors falling per hour. Produced by dust grains which are left behind by the comet 21P Giacobini-Zinnerthe shower was first discovered in 1900. The Draconids is an unusual shower and the best viewing is early evening instead of early morning. The shower will be seen from October 6-10 and peaks this year on the night of the 7th.

The red planet will be at its closest approach to Earth with its face fully illuminated by the Sun. Mars will be brighter and will be visible all night long.

The Moon will be on the same side of the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This occurs at 19:32 UTC.

It is an average shower which produces up to 20 meteors per hour and is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley. The shower can be seen from October 2 to November 7. It peaks on the night of the 21st and the morning of the 22nd.

The Southern Taurids minor meteor shower has about 5-10 meteors per hour. This shower produces a higher than normal percentage of bright fireballs. The Southern Taurids is produced by debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. The shower is seen from September 10 to November 20.

The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth and will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 14:51 UTC. This is a rare calendar event which only occurs every few months and gives rise to the term “once in a blue moon”.

The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and will be brighter than any other time of the year. It will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view Uranus.
