In case you’d forgotten, Xbox is kicking off the the Tokyo Games Show tomorrow, September 24th with a 50 minute showcase, but Microsoft has warned fans not to expect any acquisition news to come out of the event.
This follows a fresh bout of admittedly shaky speculation over the past 24 hours that the company might be planning to buy Sega, but as expected, Microsoft says it has nothing to announce in Tokyo:
The showcase itself will be broadcast entirely in Japanese and will celebrate Japanese game creators & games, provide update news for Microsoft Flight Simulator for PC and focus on the Japanese Minecraft community, with no new Xbox Series X/S news scheduled for the event whatsoever.
If you fancy catching it though, it’ll be live on the Tokyo Game Show YouTube channel at 8AM ET / 1PM BST.
Fraser has an unhealthy obsession for all things related to Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead series, and has an intimate knowledge of sports games on Xbox One. He also supports Walsall FC – that team in the West Midlands you’ve never heard of.
I guess it’s true that it’d be too soon to announce another acquisition. However, I’m still not writing off the possibility of a SEGA acquisition/partnership in the future. It just makes sense given Microsoft’s history with them, the “hints” on Twitter and their need of more Japanese franchises in their portfolio.
I just hope they can make a deal with sega to bring all of their IP to xbox like persona franchise and yakuza
Personally, I expect the Japanese xCloud Launch date. Update on some known Japanese games coming to XBox. And maybe, and this is a big maybe, info on a new game.
@LtSarge while sega is a good partnership target, it’s Square Enix the ones they have to aim if they want more japanese gamers. The xbox missed out on the FF VII Remake, which sold 5M units this year.
Sure, FFXVI will be out on PC, but the fact that it will not be on xbox means less sales of series x/s for them. MS really need to score some exclusives and new IPs from SE to gain more relevancy in Japan. Then focus on Atlus and Capcom next
Sounds like they’re squandering the chance to court the anime game audience and developers whom Sony doesn’t want.
I am holding off buying Yakuza 7 with 50% discount currently on Japanese PSN until I have seen what Microsoft announces.
