Activision has finally unveiled COD 2020, with a story mode featuring non-linear Hitman style levels and a customisable player character.

This year’s new Call Of Duty game has finally been announced, with Activision confirming that Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released on current and next gen formats on 13 November.

Although the name leaked out ages ago almost nothing else was known about the game until earlier this week. The reveal today was only for the story campaign, with multiplayer not due to be shown until 9 September, but Activision has confirmed that Zombies mode will be in the game.

Cold War’s campaign starts in 1981 (although there are flashbacks to 1968) and is a direct sequel to the first entry in the Black Ops sub-series, with the main plot revolving around trying to catch a Soviet agent codenamed Perseus for US president Ronald Regan.

This means the return of original Black Ops characters Woods, Hudson, and Mason, although according to Eurogamer one of the surprise features is a character creator for your player character, including changing their gender or opting and gender neutral pronouns.

Not only that but you’ll be able to set-up a psychological profile that provides special perks, such as lone wolf enabling you to sprint for longer or paranoid halving the time needed to aim down sights.

Another major change is making level progression less linear – a long standing complaint of the series. This will include multiple paths through a level, optional objectives, dialogue options, and a branching narrative with multiple endings.

You’ll also get to do actual spywork which apparently works something like the Hitman games, as you try to steal information or assassinate Soviet commanders.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will cost more on PS5 and Xbox Series X

As you can see, the trailer uses PlayStation 5 footage, which seems to confirm that Activision is maintaining its marketing partnership with Sony in the next gen and already means the beta will be five days earlier on PlayStation consoles.

The game will allow cross-platform and cross-generational play, including moving your progress from one version to another, but there’s no indication that upgrading to a next gen version will be free.

On the contrary, the fact that there’s a Cross-Gen Bundle seems to confirm you’ll have to pay for it, one way or another.
