IAN Blackford has refused to rule out police being handed information on people who should be self-isolating to check they are complying.

The SNP’s Westminster chief said it was “far better to use the carrot than it is to use the stick”.

It comes after it emerged people told to quarantine through England’s Test and Trace system could have their details shared with officers on a “case by case” basis.

Asked if the same could be done in Scotland, Mr Blackford told the BBC’s Gordon Brewer: “If additional powers are required of course we will consider those.

The top Nat also warned that tougher curbs could be imposed if current restrictions on indoor meet-ups and a hospitality shutdown in the central belt — set to expire next Monday — do not help to drive down Covid cases.

Recently Mr Blackford said Scotland could ban English people from Covid hotspots after Wales stopped visitors from high risk areas.

He said: “What we can do, if necessary, is say that people should not travel from hotspots, whether they should be from in Scotland or people coming to Scotland from other parts of the United Kingdom.

But that will be done on an evidence-based approach where we think it’s appropriate to protect the people in all parts of the country from people travelling where it’s not necessary.

When people have to travel for business, for work, and so on – essential journeysthey will still be allowed.
