In the Ford Mustang hierarchy, aside from some Shelby examples, the mighty Mustang Boss 429 resides at the peak of the mountain. This rare, coveted, and iconic model routinely sells for big money these days, even less-than-perfect examples. But this red beauty, which is set to cross the auction block at Bonham’s Philadelphia sale on October 11th, is about as close to perfect as they get.

This particular Mustang Boss 429 has a mere 3,500 original miles on the clock, an astonishingly low figure that can be attributed to the fact that it was used as a track weapon from the day it was purchased new. Somewhere along the line, the original Boss 429 spun a rod bearing and was replaced with a 429 Cobra Jet. The Mustang remained with its original owner until 1985.

The car then changed hands, and the new owner wanted to return it to its original, glorious condition, so they commissioned Bob Perkins of Perkins Restoration to do just that. Perkins spent a good bit of time sourcing NOS parts for the extensive job, which was completed in 1988.

The finished product was a hit on the show circuit, racking up National Point Champion distinctions twice at Mustang Club of America events and a triple crown at the 1989 Shelby Nationals.

Since then, the Mustang Boss 429 has been kept in tip top shape in climate-controlled storage, and remains in amazing condition today. The car carries an auction estimate of $250,000-$300,000, which isn’t terrible considering its history, mileage, and condition.

Those seeking a stellar Boss 429 certainly won’t find many better ones, that’s for sure. And with a total production run of less than 1,400 cars, we rarely see them pop up for sale as-is. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see what this beautiful car ultimately hammers for.

We’ll have more cool classics like this to share soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Bronco news and around-the-clock Ford news coverage.

Brett’s lost track of all the Fords he’s owned over the years and how much he’s spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
