Chinese scientists claim to have built a quantum computer capable of performing certain calculations near 100 trillion times faster than the world's most advanced supercomputer, which represents the first important step in the country's efforts to develop the technology.
Researchers have built a prototype quantum computer capable of detecting up to 76 photons using Gaussian boson sampling, a standard simulation algorithm, said the state-run Xinhua News Agency, citing research published in Science magazine. This is exponentially faster than existing supercomputers documentwrite (“”); googletagcmdpush (function () {googletagdefineOutOfPageSlot (‘/ 6516239 / outofpage_1x1_desktop’, ‘div-gpt-ad-1490771277198-0’)addService (googletagpubads ()); googletagpubades ()enableSyncRendering (); googletagenableServices ();});
Breakthrough represents quantum computing advantage, also known as quantum supremacy, in which no traditional computer can perform the same task in a reasonable amount of time and is unlikely to be negated by algorithmic or hardware improvements, according to research.
Although it is only in its infancy, quantum computing is seen as the key to radically improving the processing speed and power of computers, allowing them to simulate large systems and stimulate the progress of physics, chemistry and other fields. Chinese researchers compete with big US companies Alphabet IncGoogle to Amazoncom Inc and Microsoft Corp for technology lead, which has become yet another front in the Chinese Tech US-Course
Google said last year that it had built a computer capable of performing a calculation by 200 seconds which would take about 10000 years to the fastest supercomputers, reaching quantum supremacy. Chinese researchers say their new prototype is capable of treating 10 billion times faster than Google's prototype, according to Xinhua report
Xi Jinping's government is building a national laboratory for 10 billion dollars for quantum information science as part of a big push in this field In the US, l’administration Trump a fourni 1 billion dollars in funding for artificial intelligence and quantum information research earlier this year and sought to take credit for Google's breakthrough in 2019
