As we move to PCI Express 40 SSD, Intel Focuses on Optane Server Storage

By surprise, Intel has announced it is abandoning all Optane SSDs intended for the consumer market only

As reported by Tom’s Hardware, the decision was quick, with the last order dates for all consumer Optane readers already placed and final deliveries scheduled for February 26 Intel did not provide a detailed explanation as to why it decided to do so, but with the recent unveiling of a new Optane P5800X SSD for data center servers, it's clear Intel sees a business future for Optane.

In the stop notes, Intel declares: “Intel Will Not Provide New High Capacity Optane Memory SSDs As Transition Product For Customer Market Segment Intel Will Focus On New Optane H20 Memory With SSD Storage For Customer Market Segment”

So the latest consumer-focused Optane product is the Optane Memory H20 drives. These are QLC flash SSDs aimed at the laptop market that take advantage of an Optane memory cache for a speed boost The discontinued Optane-only drives include SSDs Optane 905P, 900, 800P and M10.

Optane SSDs certainly weren't cheap, and the decision to stop offering them to consumers comes as the market shifts to PCI Express 40 readers, promising read and write speeds of greater than 6000 Mbps Le PCI Express 3 the fastest0 could theoretically offer, including existing consumer Optane SSDs, was from 3000 Mbps
