The criminal justice system faces a growing number of infections tearing apart prisons and courts
Covid outbreaks have been confirmed in 76 of 117 prisons in England and Wales early last week, including all of London, according to official figures released. Infections of prisoners increased by 46% between the week and last Monday, with 498 prisoners tested positive
More than one member of the prison staff on 10 was either absent with Covid, either self-isolate on Friday, according to an internal memo, with 1383 at home with infections
The number of deaths among prison staff is not known, more 51 prisoners died, including four in the week preceding 11 January, and 28 others died in the community under surveillance
