Each retirement home across Ireland will receive a collection of photographs taken from a Dublin explorer’s travels around the world
Vincent Butler is the originator of the Sixty Photographs for Simon collection, an initiative to raise funds for the homeless charity, la Simon Community
The collection of photographs was taken from the explorer's travels around the world while working as a lecturer aboard the expedition cruise ship, le National Geographic Explorer, and as expedition leader with Across the Divide
Twenty-five countries are represented in a wide geographic range in the collection of images, from the Arctic to the Sahara, through Antarctica
The book was originally published in 2018 and is now sent in over 400 nursing homes across the country, as well as in schools following a recent fundraising initiative to support the Simon community

As Christmas approaches, M. Butler launched a fundraising initiative for the charity, according to which each donation of 10 euros received would result in a copy of the book being sent to a retirement home or school.
He collected more than 12 000 euros, which will allow each retirement home in the country to receive the collection of photographs
This initiative is supported by An Post's free mail service for parcels delivered to nursing homes
M. Butler said: «My travels have allowed me to explore some of the most diverse places in the world and capture different geographies, wildlife, natural history and heritage.
“My camera was my companion in capturing these very special experiences and the book selects the most beautiful and memorable photos of them

«I am delighted to report that the Irish tradition of‘ meitheal ’, bringing together a group of people to help others, is very much alive in our wonderful country
“When I first broached the idea of fundraising, a cohort close to 18 friends joined me. Ensemble, we have collected 12 357 euros and every book we send has supported the Simon community”
