NHS Grampian revealed that over 100 people connected to the institution have now tested positive for the killer bug since clusters first emerged.

The total number of virus cases at the uni has more than doubled since last Wednesday – when 62 people had become infected.

It comes after thousands of students at campuses across Scotland were forced to self-isolate last month due to major Covid outbreaks.

Contact tracing teams are currently working to track down anyone else who may have caught the virus.

It’s understood bug cases have been linked to students staying in private flats as well as student halls.

But NHS bosses say there is no evidence that the clusters have spread to the wider community in the city.

A spokesperson for the incident management team said: “A multi-agency investigation is ongoing into 142 cases of Covid-19 identified within the University of Aberdeen student population.

“This figure includes those living in various locations, including university halls of residents, private flats and private halls elsewhere.

“The cases are currently not being treated as a single cluster. Investigations are ongoing and efforts are being made to identify any linkages between them.

“There is currently no evidence of spread to the wider community and, working with the university, various control measures have been implemented in an effort to curb the risk of any further transmission.”
