There can be lucrative time frames when houses will rent for more than the average going rate, like a house near a football stadium or along a major annual parade route. For example, a bedroom with a private bath in New Orleans normally rents for $115 a night on Airbnb, but around Halloween, the price surges to $179 because it’s considered haunted. Could buying and renting haunted houses offer the same potential for a vacation rental?
Let’s take a look at seven “haunted” houses you can rent this Halloween. Maybe it will inspire you to find your own spooky investment with enchanting profit potentials that may just make you cackle with glee.
This vintage estate castle was built in 1929 by ornithologist Robert Moore, a man allegedly so paranoid that he hired new workers every day during construction so no one would find out his secrets. He died in the home one day before Halloween in 1958 and is still said to roam the halls. If he was that paranoid in life, I wonder what he is like in the afterlife.
This is a fifth-generation home still owned by Reverend Stroud’s son. There are no claims by the host of anyone dying in the house, but guests have seen glowing orbs in the living room, music boxes turning themselves on, and lights turning on and off randomly. Creepy enough, if you ask me.
A huge place with three cabins that accommodate up to 21 guests, this old travel lodge once had President Lyndon B. Johnson grace its rooms. The cabin, servants’ quarters, and cottage were built almost 100 years ago. By some accounts you can still hear the former owner, Nancy, weeping from time to time. Or was it just the old house creaking?
A historic hotel right near downtown claims not just one frightful guest but four: the smell of the original owner’s cigar smoke still lingering, a pair of “suicide brides” in room 525, and a little girl who died there in 1890 chasing a ball down the stairs. Want to know more? Just ask the front desk for a fact sheet.
We all know about the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Do you know where they staged the hospital after that historic battle? You guessed it. You can rent rooms in this old farmhouse, which still has the ghosts of dead soldiers wandering around. Don’t worry; the current owner says they’re very friendly.
No ghosts here — just a daughter who was possessed in 2017. This gorgeously updated home was featured in The Dead Files for paranormal activity — a dog who won’t go upstairs, lights going on and off, etc. Have you seen The Prodigy? Maybe best to hold off until after your visit.
We’ll wrap up the list with a ship, not a home. This haunted ship has had a number of rough experiences, including a split hull, which resulted in only a handful of survivors. It’s now been converted into an almost 350-room floating hotel where you can take ghost tours to meet the engineer who died in the engine room — while enjoying first-class dining.
These vacation rentals all mention and may even play up their ethereal guests or supernatural occurrences. And looking at the rates around Halloween versus the rest of the year, this method of marketing can be lucrative. But all of them also offer well-appointed rooms or homes, highlight great local features or other positive aspects of the property, boast great reviews, and offer competitive pricing for much of the year.
If you’re considering investing in a haunted cottage or vacation home, make sure to look for more in the property than some spooky ghost stories.
