Following up on its release date reveal last month, Netflix has now dropped the official Dragon’s Dogma anime trailer ahead of the series’s debut on Sept. 17. The animated series is an adaptation of the 2012 Capcom video game that was subsequently revamped as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and later ported to Nintendo Switch. Animation studio Sublimation is working on the series, and as the trailer demonstrates, the Dragon’s Dogma anime will be a dark and grounded interpretation — and probably pretty epic.
The story is about Ethan, whose heart is taken by a dragon when he tries to protect his family. However, rather than die, Ethan comes back as the “Arisen” and goes on a journey to retrieve his heart with a “Pawn” named Hannah. Complicating things is that Ethan loses more of his humanity as he slays monsters, which are embodiments of the seven deadly sins. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The Dragon’s Dogma anime has a “fusion of 2D animation and Sublimation’s amazing CG technology,” but I think amazing may be pushing it. I’m honestly not a fan of it, and it reminds me a bit of the much-maligned newer Berserk anime, though I’m sure this series will look much better than that.
